WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan told France's Finance Minister Thierry Breton the United States has "lost control" of its budget deficit, the French minister said Saturday.

"'We have lost control,' that was his expression," Breton told reporters after a bilateral meeting with Greenspan.

"The United States has lost control of their budget at a time when racking up deficits has been authorized without any control (from Congress)," Breton said.

...Breton said: "The situation that is creating tension today on the currency market ... is clearly the American deficit."

The United States needed to address its budget deficit, he said, adding: "It seems to me that my counterpart John Snow is completely aware of this, he wants to harness the problem, but it seems to me he doesn't have the room for maneuver."

Breton added that after hearing Greenspan talk about inflation: "One has the feeling -- though he didn't say so -- that interest rates will probably continue to rise slightly until his departure."

British SAS Commandos Caught Red-Handed Sowing Fake Terror in Iraq

Here is a little story for my new friend TD who had not heard about it yet today and all my friends that don't believe that the US & UK are capable of "Fake Terror".

The Iraqi police stopped a suspicious car with two occupants wearing Arab clothing. The car was packed with explosives, and the occupants opened fire on the police. One Iraqi police officer was killed and one wounded. The police succeeded in capturing the occupants of the car and surprise, surprise, what they found they had were not "insurgents" or "Foreign Fighters" but two undercover British SAS Commandos!! (probably working directly for one of the intelliegence agencies)



The British SAS Commandos were wearing WIGS and Arab Headdress...


And were armed to the teeth with reportedly a car full of explosives...


British Forces attack the police station to free the two murderers with tanks and helicopters before they can confess...


but the Iraqi people who have now figured out the who the real terrorists in Iraq are... attack the British forces sent to rescue the two commandos caught murdering one of their policemen (and who were probably going to set a bomb that would have then been blamed on the Iraqi resistance)


This is, of course, proof that the so-called suicide bombings pointed to as reason to oppose the Iraqi people's efforts to oust the occupation are in fact false-flag operations by the occupiers themselves. The British really did not have any choice but to break their men out of that jail before they talked, but in all honesty, doing so amounts to a confession of guilt anyway.

There have also been reports out of Iraq that US Forces have been stopping and detaining Iraqis and when they are released and sent to Iraq police stations to collect their drivers licenses and papers. When they drive away they discover that their cars are full of explosives:

“A few days ago, an American manned check point confiscated the driver license of a driver and told him to report to an American military camp near Baghdad airport for interrogation and in order to retrieve his license. The next day, the driver did visit the camp and he was allowed in the camp with his car. He was admitted to a room for an interrogation that lasted half an hour. At the end of the session, the American interrogator told him: ‘OK, there is nothing against you, but you do know that Iraq is now sovereign and is in charge of its own affairs. Hence, we have forwarded your papers and license to al-Kadhimia police station for processing. Therefore, go there with this clearance to reclaim your license. At the police station, ask for Lt. Hussain Mohammed who is waiting for you now. Go there now quickly, before he leaves his shift work”.The driver did leave in a hurry, but was soon alarmed with a feeling that his car was driving as if carrying a heavy load, and he also became suspicious of a low flying helicopter that kept hovering overhead, as if trailing him. He stopped the car and inspected it carefully. He found nearly 100 kilograms of explosives hidden in the back seat and along the two back doors.The only feasible explanation for this incidence is that the car was indeed booby trapped by the Americans and intended for the al-Khadimiya Shiite district of Baghdad. The helicopter was monitoring his movement and witnessing the anticipated “hideous attack by foreign elements”.The same scenario was repeated in Mosul, in the north of Iraq. A car was confiscated along with the driver’s license. He did follow up on the matter and finally reclaimed his car but was told to go to a police station to reclaim his license. Fortunately for him, the car broke down on the way to the police station. The inspecting car mechanic discovered that the spare tire was fully laden with explosives."

The 'Barbarous Relic' - It's Not What You Think

"This chart presents a base 100 analysis of crude oil prices in terms of dollars and grams of gold, i.e., goldgrams. In other words, to establish the useful comparison depicted above, this analysis assumes that one barrel of crude equals $100 and 100 goldgrams as of December 1945, and then calculates the month-end price thereafter based on the actual dollar price of crude oil and the prevailing dollar-to-goldgram rate of exchange.

We can see that the price of crude oil in goldgrams is essentially unchanged throughout this period. So it is clear that gold communicates economic value very effectively, which is the primary feature of money. Because money is the tool upon which economic activity is based, which is a reality that therefore makes money central to society, money is not barbaric. Consequently, gold cannot possibly be barbaric because gold is money.

Nor is it a relic because gold communicates value today as effectively as it did fifty years ago, and much better than the US dollar, which is a point made clear by the above chart. In contrast to today's national currencies, gold tends to hold its value, or in other words, its purchasing power remains relatively unchanged. In fact, this precious attribute of gold is timeless because the aboveground stock of gold grows approximately at the same rate of world population growth and new wealth creation.

So how could anything so valuable and useful as gold be barbaric? And because gold is as useful today as it ever was, how could it possibly be a relic?

This gold pejorative is readily attributed to Keynes. But here is what he really wrote in 1923 in A Tract on Monetary Reform: "…the gold standard is already a barbarous relic."...

...Note that it is not gold that is the barbarous relic, but rather, Keynes is taking aim at the gold standard. There is a very big difference here. The gold standard is the mechanism by which national currencies at one time were defined as weights of, and redeemable into, gold.

Though the United States continued to define the dollar in terms of gold when Keynes penned those now infamous words, it had become the exception. Most of Europe had stopped the redeemability of paper currency into gold with the outbreak of hostilities in 1914. What's more, after the war European countries were slow to return to the gold standard because their currencies had become terribly debased by the expansion of credit and the concurrent printing of money that had occurred over the intervening years.

In effect, by the 1920's the classical gold standard was essentially dead, which was the reality observed by Keynes. It was dead because banking interests, working hand-in-hand with governments, killed it. They killed it because governments wanted more money to meet their growing spending aspirations, and seeing the profit opportunity this circumstance presented, bankers wanted to lend it to them. The discipline of the classical gold standard prevented the unbridled extension of credit and the resulting creation of new money, with the result that it had to go. So is that why the gold standard had become a 'barbarous relic'?

During Gulf II he was a regular on the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer as well as on BBC radio and television, and National Public Radio. He authored “The Enemy is Us” an article describing how the Bush Administration used disinformation and psychological warfare – weapons usually used against the 'enemy' – against the American public in order to support the war in Iraq. He has done an extensive analysis of the media coverage before the war, during the war and during the occupation as well as of the statements of Administration officials. His conclusions are startling and of great concern. He has put his findings in a report entitled: “Truth from These Podia.”

Zeese: Can you give some examples of false or exaggerated stories put out by the Bush administration in the build-up to the war?

Gardiner: In the summer of 2003, we know from the Downing Street Memo that the Administration was talking about justifying a war by arguing that Iraq was the nexus of terrorism and WMD.
The terrorism argument was what propaganda literature would refer to as the big lie. The Administration’s objective was to make enough arguments connecting Iraq to terrorism and Bin Laden that the American people would believe Iraq was behind the 9/11 attacks. They used a technique called the excluded middle. Iraq supports terrorists. The attacks were by terrorists. Iraq must been behind the 9/11 attacks.
We the WMD story fairly well. We know the story of the uranium from Niger. We know about the aluminum tubes that were not for uranium enrichment. We know the biological labs Powell showed to the UN did not exist.
Beyond these there are many exaggerations that have gotten very little notice. Let me mention just a few.

A New York Times reporter was told by the Administration that Iraq was buying excess quantities of atropine to get ready for chemical warfare. It turns out the quantities were consistent with the Iraq use of the substance for routine medical purposes.

The President told us in a speech in Ohio that Iraq had drone aircraft that could possible deliver chemical weapons into the United States. When that facility was found, the officers reported that it looked more like a school project than a serious military program.

The Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz told the Council on Foreign Relations that Iraq had the capability to attack US computers. They did not.

We were lead to believe a Navy pilot shot down during the first Gulf War was alive and being held in Baghdad. He was not.

We were told on the State Department web sit that Iraq was forming units of children to fight the United States. Iraq did not do that.

We were told the French were supplying air defense missiles to Iraq. That was not ture
There were many more.

Zeese: How about information during the war? Did the embedded journalists help give the U.S. a more accurate or less accurate perspective? How did the Pentagon control information?

Gardiner: A number of democratic institutions failed us during the war. Certainly, the press was among those. I attended a conference in London in July 2003 at which one of the PR firms that advised the Pentagon talked about lessons learned from the effort. They were pleased that they were able to dominate the story. That was their objective. The embedded notion had been tested in Afghanistan, and it proved to be effective. The product was lots of coverage with personal stories of soldiers. That was the Pentagon objective. Keep their story on television. Keep people talking about Meals Ready to Eat, and they won't criticize the war.

"On February 26, 2003, three weeks before the Iraq invasion, a secret meeting was held at the Pentagon. The Army Corps of Engineer’s Lieutenant General Carl Strock was present as were representatives from the State department, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and others, including several representatives from Halliburton. On the agenda was the decision as to which contractor would get the RIO contract, estimated to be worth several billion dollars over five years. No announcement of the contract had been made or put out to bid, as is the normal procedure, but it was clear that Halliburton would be in the running, even though government contractors claim that other major corporations were equally capable. 6

The Army Corps’ chief procurement officer, Bunnatine Greenhouse, who was present at the meeting, was stunned. She whispered to General Strock that the Halliburton representatives leave the room. The general agreed reluctantly. (Normally protocol dictates that the contractor that draws up a plan for a project should not be allowed to bid on the job itself because they know insider details that would give them an unfair advantage).

Once Halliburton’s representatives had gone, Greenhouse raised other concerns. She argued that the five-year term for the contract was not necessary, that it should be for one year only and then be opened to competition. Strock and his colleagues ignored her opinion—when the approval document arrived the next day for Greenhouse’s signature, the terms were a sole-source contract made out to Halliburton for five years.

With war likely to take place in a matter of days, she had little choice but to sign off on the contract. But she added a handwritten note saying she felt that extending a no-bid contract beyond one year could send a message that “there is not strong
intent for a limited competition.” 7

On March 6, 2003, less than two weeks before the invasion, an email from a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers official, described securing “authority to execute RIO” after “DepSecDef [ie Wolfowitz] sent us to UnderSecPolicy [Under Secretary of Policy Douglas] Feith and gave him authority to approve” (the RIO contract).8 The final contract stated that the company could be awarded as much as $7 billion in repair work.9"
